Help is welcome with setup, during the sale, and with breakdown. Setup helpers get first pick of
the books! Contact Liza Levy at 859-987-7159 with questions or offers of help.

Thousands of gently used books, including fiction and non-fiction titles, will be available for sale. Non-members may join at the door on Thursday or attend the public sale on Friday. Proceeds of the book sale are used by the Friends group to help fund special projects at the Paris-Bourbon County Library. The group recently donated $5,000 to the library to help defray the cost of a new microfilm reader.

DONATIONS

  • Please bring book donations to the library ONLY in the week prior to a scheduled sale, as storage space is very limited. If you are bringing books to the library and need help with carrying boxes, please call the library in advance (859-987-4419) to make sure that someone will be available to assist you. (Smaller/lighter boxes are always appreciated!)

  •  Receipts for contributions are available; however, you are responsible for placing a value on the items you donate.

NEWS

  •

  • Libraries are more important than ever during the recession. They provide free information and entertainment in the form of books, books on tape/CD, and videos, as well as various programs and Internet access. Many people use the library's computers for online job searches. On June 11, 2009, the Paris-Bourbon County Library had its busiest day ever, with over 734 transactions. The Friends are proud to assist with these endeavors. We particularly look forward to helping with expansion, which, unfortunately, must wait until grant money is available. We hope to hold special fundraisers when that time comes. Meanwhile, any money that is not immediately needed may be earmarked for a building fund.

  • Our book sales have become even more popular with the addition of videos. Our last four sales grossed almost $4000, including our online sales. Our sale in August was great, with twenty boxes of books donated by one person, in addition to our usual new donations. We continue to weed out books that have not sold over several book sales. Remember, helping with the book sales provides exercise, social contact, and spiritual satisfaction of a needed job well done. Those who help with setup also get first chance at the books!

  • Every year the Friends fund the book giveaway at the end of the Library's Summer Reading Program. Every child who registers for the program gets to choose a free book, from a selection chosen by Dawn Privett, Children and Youth Librarian. The children are thrilled to receive their new books. A sticker inside mentions our involvement.

  • The Friends gave the Library money to purchase an industrial-sized popcorn machine for use at special events such as movie night. Children and adults both love it. The first time it was used, 26 batches were eaten, and people still wanted more after the event was over. The aroma of popcorn can also help make the library more welcoming to everyone.

  • Work has started on reviving a statewide organization of Friends groups. This will perform such services as lobbying on behalf of libraries, aiding networking, and providing help for counties trying to organize new FOL groups. The first meeting was a mixture of live attendance and teleconferencing for remote counties. Right now a steering committee is working on putting things together. Anticipated membership fees are low, but we will decide when we get the final information.

  • Members, if you would like online notifications, please make sure we have your e-mail address.

NEWS

We have been partners for about a year and a half with Friends of the Library Online (FOLO - folbooks.com). At intervals the owner, Kevin Bradley, goes through our new donations and selects some of the more valuable ones to offer on the Internet, splitting the net profit, after expenses. "Valuable" is loosely defined: the range goes from $1.50 for a paperback, where we got $0.65 instead of $0.25, to a hardback that sold for $182.50, netting us about $78. The company has an excellent reputation, and they have recently started putting out a newsletter with helpful tips for Friends of the Library groups.
